Science

Our Curriculum Intent

We will bring out the best by developing learners’ critical thinking and enquiry so that they have an appreciation of the complexity of the world around them through:

  1. developing and enhancing their curiosity, subject knowledge and investigative skills
  2. providing opportunities for students to think and act like scientists
  3. considering the impact of their decisions on the environment around them, the role that scientists play (and have played) in sculpting our modern world and becoming responsible citizens.

Knowledge & skills:  learners will learn, recall and apply scientific knowledge.  They will carry out effective, valid and ethical investigative work in a stimulating and enjoyable environment.

Thinking and acting like a scientist:  learners will be able to develop their investigative skills, maths skills, communication skills and problem-solving skills.  We will encourage learners to consider scientific evidence and evaluate its reliability and validity in order to draw reasonable conclusions.

Impact on the environment and responsible citizens:  students will have the opportunity to apply their understanding of science to social, economic and environmental challenges.  As responsible global citizens, they will be encouraged to question current thinking (e.g. cultural, moral), problem-solve, and consider their own impact on society.

National Curriculum Mapping

Our schemes of work are aligned with the National Curriculum and are designed to at least meet its requirements, going beyond them in many respects.

The National Curriculum Purpose of Study for Science is as follows:

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
