Homework

Homework is an essential part of a child's education.  It helps students to consolidate what they have done; it gives them a chance to prepare for work to come; and it helps them to develop independent study skills.  Homework should be meaningful for the student and manageable for the teacher.

At The Howard, we will:

• Set homework on a regular basis in line with Faculty guidelines for each Key Stage
• Set tasks which are suitable and achievable
• Relate homework tasks to work completed in class
• Provide support to students at school such as homework clubs and research facilities

All homework will be set on Microsoft Teams as an Assignment. 

If the homework is a task which requires submission, this may be done using Microsoft Teams or in hard copy, as specified by the teacher.  Although all homework will be checked, it may not be appropriate to assess and give feedback on every piece of homework completed:  particularly if it is a preparation or revision task.

Students will be rewarded for completing homework to the best of their ability through reward points, and may be asked to re-do their homework if it is substandard.

If a student fails to complete their homework, this is logged centrally, and monitored by the Department/Faculty who will put support in place to ensure that the homework is completed.  Persistent non-completion of homework may lead to a detention, or a student being placed into a homework support club where they can work with a member of staff to complete the homework.

The general expectations for staff when setting homework each week are set out below:

Key Stage 3

Approximately 30 minutes per subject, following the guidelines below:

• English
• Maths
• Languages
• Additional homework from subjects as appropriate
• Reading
• No homework will be set for completion during the holidays

Key Stage 4

Approximately 40 minutes - 1 hour per subject, per week, in line with faculty guidelines.

Key Stage 5

Students are expected to carry out 1 hour of independent study for each taught hour for all of their courses.  This time can be made up of homework tasks and additional reading, in line with faculty guidelines.
