Government & Politics
Our Curriculum Intent
At the Howard of Effingham school students study A level Government and Politics to better understand the issues facing the modern world through the lens of Britain and America. One key issue for consideration is the extent to which governments influence the lives of the people, and whether limited government is preferable to interventionist government. Another key issue is the choice of voting system, which is the most democratic and which is the most practical for the UK and the USA. The lowering of the voting age to sixteen and term-limits for all legislators are also on the agenda of progressive reformers. On this learning journey, students are invited to separate their own politics, be they conservative, liberal or socialist, from the study of it, for the purpose of being able to determine that which hinders and enhances democracy. Students will be encouraged and supported to express their own line of argument on an issue whilst developing their understanding of other viewpoints.
