ART & DESIGN TEXTILES

The course provides opportunities to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills that offers students a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts in the visual arts, crafts and design fields.

Textiles: encompasses a very broad range of materials, techniques and processes, including a growing number of interdisciplinary approaches. These comprise woven, embroidered, knitted, printed, painted, dyed, manipulated, embellished and constructional methods which are utilised to produce a great variety of textile outcomes that include costume and fashion design, accessories and body adornment. The range is increasing as new materials and technologies emerge.

 

Possible areas of study include:

  •  fashion
  •  costume
  •  digitally or traditionally printed and/or dyed fabrics, garments and  materials
  •  interior design
  •  constructed textiles (knitted, woven, embellished or combined with  other materials)
  •  textile installation
  •  accessories

The course includes purposeful use of drawing to record information and may take the form of:

  • sketches
  • analytical observational studies
  • storyboards
  • thumbnail sketches
  • layouts
  • roughs
  • experimental or expressive studies
  • 2 or 3D modelling
  • detailed designs or elevations

 

Assessment Format

Component 1 - 60% of the total qualification, internally assessed, externally moderated.

Component 2 - 40% of the total qualification, internally assessed, extrenally moderated.

Course Entry Requirements:

GCSE grade 5 in Art and Design, Fine Art , Textile Design, Media Studies or DT Graphics
